The story of the novel is very interesting it starts from the daughter of a future film actress by the name of April who was sent to live with her grandmother in an apartment house located in Berkeley, California. The young girl feel abandoned and hide her grief with Hollywood mannerisms and truculent sarcasm. Her grandmother arranges to meet with neighbour children: Marshall Ross and Melanie and they exchange similar thoughts about interest in archaeology and imagining games. April also visits a nearby antique shop owned by a mysterious old man by the name of Professor. In the shop, April finds a replica of a well-known bust of Nefertiti which helps her to create a sustained imaginary game about old Egypt. April and her friends explore old Egyptian practices and belief system and develop their own rituals which they can use to reproduce them more or less authentically. Elizabeth invites them into the game because they fear they will ruin everything.
