Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde focus on the duality of humanity in nature, although the theme does not fully arise before the previous chapter when the full history of the Jekyll-Hyde relationship unfolds. We are therefore clearly confronted with the theory of dual human nature only after seeing all the events of the novel, including Hyde’s crime and its final adoption by Jekyll. Jekyll argues that “man is not really one, but really two,” and he views the human soul as a battlefield for “angels” and “love” in which to fight to master. But his illness, which he hoped would separate and purify every element, succeeds only on the dark side – Hyde appears, but he has no angelic counterpart. Jekyll and Hyde Review:
On their weekly walk, an experienced attorney called Mr. Utterson and listened as his friend told the gruesome tale of the attack on Enfield. The story tells of a corrupt figure in the town of Hyde, who crushes a young girl, disappears in a street door, and returns to pay relatives a check signed by a respected gentleman. Since Atterson and Anfield refuse to gossip, they agree not to comment further on the matter. It happens, however, that Utterson clients and close friends, Dr. Jekyll, have written a will to transfer all of their assets to the same Mr. Hyde. Soon Utterson began dreaming of a faceless figure seen through a poor version of London on Mercury.
