Benjamin Franklin Autobiography Review:
Franklin’s autobiography is a reflection of 18th-century idealism. Often referred to as the age of logic, the 18th century is the age of men like John Locke and Isaac Newton. Intelligence flourished alongside scientific and political thought. Many are optimistic that man can be improved through scientific and political progress. Firstly, Franklin partially acknowledges these beliefs, and the second part of his autobiography shows him that he is trying to keep them alive. Secondly, The Benjamin Franklin Autobiography tells what today’s life of 18th century America looked like. Naturally, the story is told only from the point of view of one person, but in an era when literacy was low and writing was not widespread, any surviving documents are important to historians who want to know how people lived.
